I started my journey of giving back to the community back in 2016, as a WordPress Translator, when Ahmad Awais organized a local WordPress Translation Meetup on WordPress Translation Day 2. Since then, I enjoyed my stay in the WordPress community so much that I could not help myself involving in the community and WordPress itself. And this time, I am planning to arrange a local WordPress Translation meet up in Pakistan along with Ahmad Awais, on Global WordPress Translation Day 3 – September 30th, 2017. And guess what, this time celebrations are huge because 30th September is also declared as International Translation Day by United Nations.

I feel excited to share our thoughts and plans for the translation day.

🙌 Our Journey So Far:

With a vision to encourage people using WordPress in Pakistan, Ahmad Awais took an initiative to translate WordPress into Urdu – The national language of Pakistan. It was last year, in November 2016, on WordPress Translation Day 2 when he organized a local meetup for this very purpose. Ahmad introduced the Pakistani Developers to the translation, highlighted its significance and explained the entire working process. He was able to curate a team of more than 60 people who participated in online and offline meet up to translate the WordPress into Urdu.

EVENT⚡️: Global WordPress Translation Day 3 1 Community

For the very first time, WordPress was translated 100% into Urdu. WordPress 4.7 was the first version to be released in Urdu. Following the spirit, we were able to maintain the translation in v4.8 as well. Currently, three versions, 4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 are available in Urdu. Not only that, but we also participated in the Caldera Forms party last month and helped them to be available 100% in Urdu. And it’s quite overwhelming to see this community growing and participating in such events.

📢 Agenda For Global WordPress Translation Day 3:

Matt Mullenweg, during his speech ‘State of Press 2016,’ pointed out a 24% increase in active plugin usage and 34% increase in the plugin downloads, he owed all of this to the increase in i18n efforts in the recent year. The number of translation contributors has significantly grown from 5,000 in 2015 to 17,000 as of 2016. WordPress’ top 10 plugins are now 82% complete in the top 12 languages. The reason is, two-third of the world speaks these 12 languages.

Urdu is spoken by over 100 million people in several different areas of the world, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and the Middle East. Keeping in view these interesting facts, we decided to translate the WooCommerce plugin into Urdu this time. It is a powerful plugin which powers 2,000,000+ e-commerce stores online.

In Pakistan, the e-commerce industry has grown exponentially in the past year which is primarily due to the availability and rapid adoption of 3G/4G service. Various items, ranging from food to consumer electronics are now available online. Even local businesses are trying to move online by partnering with online stores to leverage the massive user base in Pakistan. And the availability of WooCommerce in Urdu is certainly going to help the new stores to make a digital presence.

At the same time, you can watch online sessions from community 24 hours. The sessions will be on i18n & l10n.
